“What if the compliments are true?!”
I’ve received some pretty heavy compliments from some heavy hitters. I don’t say that to brag, but to set context.
Back in my mental prison days, a heavy compliment from a heavy hitter became a bit of a problem. It created some serious cognitive dissonance for me. How could I think I was a sucky loser when one of my heroes was telling me otherwise? And with real sincerity?
Compliments can be a big problem for a person in a mental prison. It can be quite difficult to understand and reconcile the reality of a compliment with our negative self-talk. “How can someone so great appreciate my work when I’m such a schmuck?”
People with self-esteem might think this is totally asinine. (It’s okay, they’re right.) But I operated this way for decades. So, I wrote this comic to make fun of it.
FYI, this comic is one of several from my book Mental Prisons.
