“Look in the Mirror”

The Michael Jackson song got it right:

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could've been any clearer
If they wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change

Then there’s the quote misattributed to Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Though, he actually said:

We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.

We can either see the world as a series of unfolding consequences that are beyond our control, or we can look at the world as a game in which our participation (and perspective) changes things. There are other ways of seeing the world, but many of them lead nowhere productive.

I can’t control what goes on “out there,” but I can
